Give interpreters captions, monitoring, cues, and two-way private communication without contaminating the public feed.

Before you start

ASL must be enabled and entitled for the event. Roles, viewer integration, egress, usage, and PTZ availability depend on organization permissions, plan, devices, and current event state.

  • Assign a primary and backup interpreter/operator.
  • Use a supported camera, headset/microphone, well-lit space, stable network, and approved background.
  • Rehearse private and public paths on the same devices/network used for production.

Step by step

  1. Define participants. Only approved interpreter/operator/producer roles.
  2. Open private stage. Use the role-specific destination, not public Program.
  3. Configure headset. Select mic/output and prevent loudspeaker feedback.
  4. Configure confidence content. Source captions and only necessary cues.
  5. Test talkback both directions. Use a known phrase while another operator monitors public output for leakage.
  6. Set cue protocol. Ready, stand by, switch, technical problem, stop, and emergency.
  7. Test reconnect. Browser/device/network restart and rejoin.
  8. Monitor privacy. Continuously separate private/public buses.
  9. Close after event. End access and recordings according to policy.

What success looks like: Interpreters receive safe private coordination and the audience receives a verified public ASL output with tested recovery.

Check your setup

  • Private communication is clear to intended participants and absent from every public/recorded output unless explicitly authorized.

Troubleshooting

No talkback

Check mic/output permission, selected device, role, and session.

Echo

Use headset and remove loopback.

Public leakage

Mute/stop affected path immediately and correct routing.

Security and operational notes

  • Private conversations may contain sensitive information.
  • Do not record by default.
  • Use an out-of-band backup channel.
