Before you start
Requires a live 4All event and GStreamer CEA insertion plugins.
- Sign in with access to the correct organization, team, and event.
- Record event, language, workstation, app build, OS, drivers, destination, and operator.
- Commission with a test pattern and non-public receiver before program video.
- Select the correct event/language.
- Verify tttocea608, tttocea708, cccombiner, and h264ccinserter.
- Prepare a decoder that selects 608 and 708 independently.
Configuration
- Enable captions and retain the CEA-608/708 standard.
- Choose 708 service 1–63; begin with service 1.
- Use CC1 for 608 compatibility and change the supported internal mapping (0, 1, or 3) only when required.
- Choose 708 roll-up/pop-on/paint-on with 608 compatibility, pure 708, or 608-only roll-up 2/3/4, pop-on, or paint-on.
- For live speech, begin with cea708-rollup-608-compat and two roll-up lines.
- Use Partials and finals for responsiveness or Finals only for steadier later text.
- Start test output and independently verify service 1 and CC1.
- Record service, language, mode, and receiver evidence.
What success looks like: The receiver detects the configured service and displays ordered captions in the selected mode.
Check your setup
- 708 and required 608 compatibility work.
- Line count/mode match.
- Text survives transport/transcode/recording.
- Independent evidence exists.
Troubleshooting
- No service: inspect CEA elements, H.264 insertion, and receiver selection.
- 608 works but 708 fails: verify service/downstream support.
- Repeated text: compare source/payload modes and roll-up behavior.
- Transcode strips captions: configure preservation or regeneration.
Security and operational notes
Important: A local caption overlay is not proof of embedded CEA. Validate the encoded bitstream independently.
