Record a Signal path in a format that supports the workstation and required channel count, while protecting existing files and verifying the result before show time.

Best for: operators capturing a routed program, language, rehearsal, or diagnostic output from a Signal pipeline.

Choose a format

  • WAV: up to 512 channels.
  • AIFF: up to 512 channels.
  • FLAC: up to 8 channels.
  • Opus: up to 2 channels.
  • MP3: up to 2 channels.
  • AAC/M4A: macOS only, up to 48 channels.

Select a format whose platform support and channel maximum cover the complete intended recording. Do not reduce or combine production channels merely to fit a format without an approved routing decision.

Prepare and test recording

  1. Stop the pipeline and add the recording output at the intended point in the graph.
  2. Select the supported format and verify the planned channel count.
  3. Choose an approved location with sufficient free space.
  4. Use a new, clearly named destination so overwrite protection does not encounter an existing file.
  5. Start the pipeline and make a short representative test recording.
  6. Stop the recording cleanly, then listen to the saved file on a separate playback path before show time.

Important: confirm the recording location, available space, filename, channel count, and overwrite protection before the live session. A moving Signal meter does not prove that a usable file was written.

Verify the test file

  • The file exists at the selected location and has a plausible duration and size.
  • Playback contains the intended program or target language.
  • Every required channel is present and mapped correctly.
  • There is no clipping, truncation, unexpected silence, or format playback failure.
  • Available storage covers the planned recording period with operational margin.

Troubleshoot

  • Format unavailable: check platform support; AAC/M4A is macOS only.
  • Channel count rejected: choose a format with a sufficient maximum or revise the approved recording design.
  • File already exists: select a new name instead of defeating overwrite protection blindly.
  • Recording stops: check location access, free space, pipeline state, and the upstream graph.
  • Playback differs from metering: listen to individual channels and confirm the recorder was connected at the intended graph point.

Operational and security notes

Recorded audio can contain event content and translated speech. Store, transfer, retain, and share it only under the production team's approved policy. Recording does not validate downstream transmitters or attendee receivers.
