Before you start

Requires OS and browser/desktop microphone permission.

  • Use a non-production reproduction when possible.
  • Record current configuration before changes.
  • Keep an independent confidence monitor and fallback.
  • Label the intended device, connector, channel, and sample rate.
  • Stop or mute production before changing hardware.
  • Have a test tone/speech source and headphones.

Troubleshooting steps

  1. Verify power, cable, interface clock, and OS-level input meter.
  2. Close conferencing, DAW, browser, or capture software that may hold the device exclusively.
  3. Grant microphone access to the exact browser profile or desktop application.
  4. Refresh device enumeration and select by stable name/UID, not only list position.
  5. Confirm input channel: desktop local STT uses zero-based channel indexing; multichannel devices require explicit mapping.
  6. Keep a stable supported sample rate and avoid unnecessary OS resampling.
  7. Speak into the source and confirm level, preview, transcription, and independent monitor.
  8. After hot-plug/reboot, repeat selection because IDs/indexes can change.

After the fix: The correct source drives the expected meter/channel and produces clean monitored audio and captions.

Confirm the fix

  • Physical and app meters correlate.
  • No unintended microphone is active.
  • Channel mapping is documented.
  • A reconnect/relaunch retains the selection or recovery steps.

If the problem continues

  • Visible but silent: check channel and interface mixer routing.
  • Distorted: correct gain/clock/sample rate.
  • Device disappears: use a direct powered port and repair driver.
  • Duplicate audio: close the second capture producer.
