Apply dynamics and echo control in a repeatable order and verify their effect on captions.

Before you start

Audio, speech providers, multi-speaker features, and usage are governed by event permissions, plan entitlements, provider support, credentials or wallet, and browser/device compatibility.

  • Use the production event and supported browser/device.
  • Know the source language, speaker plan, latency target, output requirements, and fallback.
  • Test with representative voices, noise, pace, and the actual signal chain.

Configuration

  1. Fix hardware first. Set microphone placement, preamp gain, mixer routing, and clean headroom.
  2. Set gate last-mile only. Use a low enough threshold for quiet speech, short safe attack, and release that avoids chopping.
  3. Set compressor. Use modest ratio/threshold to reduce level variation; add makeup gain only with headroom.
  4. Set limiter. Catch unexpected peaks without constant gain reduction.
  5. Set AEC when loudspeaker return is unavoidable. Provide a stable reference path and test double-talk.
  6. Test silence/soft/loud/overlap. Use several speakers and representative program audio.
  7. Observe CPU and latency. Advanced processing may increase resource load.
  8. Hot-apply only with rollback. During live use, communicate and change one parameter at a time.

What success looks like: The configured audio and recognition path produces stable, attributable captions within the approved latency/quality target and has a tested recovery path.

Check your setup

  • Soft speech remains complete, loud speech does not clip, silence is controlled, echo is reduced, and caption latency/accuracy is acceptable.

Troubleshooting

Gate chatters

Lower threshold or lengthen hold/release; reduce room noise at source.

Compressor pumps

Reduce ratio/depth and investigate low-frequency/ambient triggers.

Limiter constantly active

Lower upstream gain; a limiter is not a normal operating level.

Security and operational notes

  • Document defaults and changes.
  • Do not use processing as a covert recording enhancement.
  • Avoid live parameter sweeps.
