Before you start

Audio, speech providers, multi-speaker features, and usage are governed by event permissions, plan entitlements, provider support, credentials or wallet, and browser/device compatibility.

  • Use the production event and supported browser/device.
  • Know the source language, speaker plan, latency target, output requirements, and fallback.
  • Test with representative voices, noise, pace, and the actual signal chain.

How to choose

  1. Classify the source. Direct broadcast mix, close microphone, room mic, conference feed, and noisy remote audio need different treatment.
  2. Start clean and minimal. Disable unnecessary processing on a well-produced mixer feed.
  3. Choose one suppression strategy. Compare browser suppression, RNNoise, and DeepFilterNet with representative speech/noise; avoid stacking aggressive suppressors.
  4. Evaluate speech damage. Listen for lost consonants, pumping, musical noise, and clipped word starts/ends.
  5. Add gate carefully. Set it below normal quiet speech and test soft speakers.
  6. Use dynamics conservatively. Compression/limiting should control variation and peaks, not repair distortion.
  7. Configure echo control only when needed. Headphones and proper routing are preferred; AEC can affect program feeds.
  8. A/B captions. Compare recognition quality and latency before/after.
  9. Save and document. Record method and rollback.

What success looks like: The configured audio and recognition path produces stable, attributable captions within the approved latency/quality target and has a tested recovery path.

Check your setup

  • Noise is reduced without damaging intelligibility, increasing latency beyond target, or creating feedback/echo artifacts.

Troubleshooting

Words lose beginnings

Lower gate threshold/attack aggressiveness or reduce suppression.

Robotic speech

Reduce/disable stacked denoisers and inspect sample-rate/CPU load.

Echo remains

Fix speaker-to-mic routing, monitoring, and TTS feedback before relying on AEC.

Security and operational notes

  • Processing cannot undo clipping.
  • Use headphones for monitoring/TTS.
  • Test CPU-intensive models on the production machine.
