Desktop Operator App vs. Web Browser

Choose the correct surface for local processing, audio access, updates, and general cloud workflows.

Match each production role to the desktop or web surface without assuming that every capability behaves identically.

Best for: Producers, operators, organization administrators, and IT planners.

Before you start

Web features follow the organization plan; desktop-only/local features can additionally require a device entitlement.

  • Use a non-production event for commissioning.
  • Record the current build and workstation owner.
  • Prepare a documented fallback before making changes.
  • Document required audio devices, local/offline needs, OS policy, update control, and operator location.
  • Confirm the web browser is supported.
  • Confirm whether a managed desktop install is allowed.

Step by step

  1. Use the web app for general account, organization, team, billing, event planning, sharing, displays, and administration when no desktop-only integration is required.
  2. Use the desktop app when local audio-device enumeration, the forallcli sidecar, offline/local STT, signed auto-updates, or tighter operator workstation integration is required.
  3. Prefer the desktop app for a fixed production station that has been preflighted and change-controlled.
  4. Prefer the browser for occasional remote administration and viewer-facing links.
  5. Do not run the same live microphone/event from desktop and browser simultaneously unless the workflow explicitly requires separate named inputs.
  6. Test browser permissions/profile and desktop OS permissions separately.
  7. Document the selected primary and backup surface in the event runbook.

What this unlocks: Every role uses a surface that supports its task, and the backup path has been validated.

Check your understanding

  • Required devices/features are available.
  • Only intended transcription managers are active.
  • Operators know where updates and permissions are controlled.
  • The backup can take over without duplicate audio.

Common misconceptions

  • Feature visible only on one surface: use the intended supported surface.
  • Browser cannot see audio: inspect site permission and device selection.
  • Desktop sidecar unavailable: fall back to approved cloud STT if policy permits.
  • Duplicate captions: stop the unintended second producer.

Good to know

Important: Running multiple live producers against one event can duplicate usage, captions, or audio. Assign one primary source and an explicit backup procedure.
