Plan a contribution workflow in which live 4All captions are embedded as CEA-608/708 services in an encoded stream.

Best for: Broadcast engineers, streaming operators, caption engineers, master-control teams, and production IT.

Before you start

A compatible licensed 4All Encoder installation, supported capture hardware or test source, an eligible event, and a downstream system that accepts and decodes the selected output and caption service.

  • Known video format, frame rate, audio mapping, codec, bitrate, latency budget, transport protocol, receiver address, and caption-service requirements.
  • Installed and validated Blackmagic or UVC drivers when hardware is used.
  • A compatible CEA-608/708 downstream analyzer or decoder.
  • Network and credential approval for the destination.

Step by step

  1. Validate the caption source first. Run a 4All event and confirm source language, speaker routing, glossary, caption stability, and timing in the web interface.
  2. Create an Encoder stream. Select the organization and event, add a stream, and name it for source, destination, and redundancy role.
  3. Configure video input. Choose Test, Blackmagic, or UVC; select the device and signal format; verify a stable preview; and define behavior when signal is lost.
  4. Configure video encoding. Choose H.264 or H.265 according to receiver support. Set resolution, frame rate, bitrate, GOP/keyframe interval, profile, hardware acceleration, and low-latency options.
  5. Configure audio. Select the intended channels and configure AAC or Opus, sample rate, bitrate, channel layout, gain, and synchronization. Verify the exact program pair.
  6. Configure CEA captions. Enable embedded captions, map the 4All source to the required CEA-608/708 service, select character and line behavior, and document the service number expected downstream.
  7. Configure delivery. Choose RTMP/RTMPS, SRT, or RIST. Enter only the approved destination, mode, addressing, latency, passphrase or stream key, and reconnect policy.
  8. Run an end-to-end test. Start the stream, inspect encoder health, receive it on the real downstream platform, enable the caption service on a decoder, and compare visible captions with the 4All source.
  9. Rehearse recovery. Interrupt the input or receiver in a controlled test, observe alarms and reconnect behavior, then verify audio/video synchronization and caption service after recovery.

What success looks like: The receiver gets stable video and audio with captions present on the intended CEA service and within the approved latency budget.

Check your setup

  • Video format and frame rate match the receiver.
  • Audio channel mapping is correct and synchronized.
  • A downstream decoder exposes the intended CEA-608/708 service.
  • Captions survive receiver reconnect and encoder restart.
  • Logs identify input, encoding, caption, and output state transitions.

Troubleshooting

Captions appear in 4All but not downstream

Verify caption embedding is enabled, the correct event/source is selected, the intended CEA service is mapped, the container/transport supports carriage, and the decoder is tuned to that service.

Stream connects but is unstable

Check bitrate against available uplink, GOP and codec support, hardware acceleration, driver state, SRT latency or RIST profile, and receiver limits.

Audio is missing or out of sync

Check the capture channel pair, sample rate, encoder audio settings, timestamps, receiver buffering, and signal-path conversion.

Security and operational notes

  • Never expose RTMP keys, SRT passphrases, or receiver credentials in screenshots or tickets.
  • CEA validation must occur on the final downstream chain; a source-side indicator is not sufficient.
  • Keep a bypass or secondary encoder path for critical carriage.
