Before you start

ASL must be enabled and entitled for the event. Roles, viewer integration, egress, usage, and PTZ availability depend on organization permissions, plan, devices, and current event state.

  • Assign a primary and backup interpreter/operator.

  • Use a supported camera, headset/microphone, well-lit space, stable network, and approved background.

  • Rehearse private and public paths on the same devices/network used for production.

Step by step

  1. Start from requirements. Viewer sizes, platform/receiver limits, bandwidth, latency, and interpreter motion.

  2. Choose resolution. High enough for hands/facial expression while sustainable on production hardware/network.

  3. Choose frame rate. Preserve motion clarity without unnecessary bandwidth/CPU.

  4. Set crop/layout. Maintain full signing space and safe margins.

  5. Set background. Use uncluttered high-contrast presentation; avoid keying artifacts unless engineered/tested.

  6. Configure viewer/PiP. Size/position without covering captions.

  7. Test degradation. Lower bandwidth, mobile, orientation, and reconnect.

  8. Approve with interpreter/accessibility lead. Inspect public return.

  9. Record defaults/fallback. Include product version.

What success looks like: Interpreters receive safe private coordination and the audience receives a verified public ASL output with tested recovery.

Check your setup

  • Signing remains understandable and well-framed at the final viewer under expected network/device conditions.

Troubleshooting

Hands blur

Increase frame rate/quality or improve lighting/shutter/network.

Face/hands soft

Improve focus/resolution/bitrate and avoid scaling.

Background reduces contrast

Change color/lighting/layout.
