Diagnose weak, clipped, silent, busy, or disappearing inputs without destabilizing the live session.

Before you start

Audio, speech providers, multi-speaker features, and usage are governed by event permissions, plan entitlements, provider support, credentials or wallet, and browser/device compatibility.

  • Use the production event and supported browser/device.
  • Know the source language, speaker plan, latency target, output requirements, and fallback.
  • Test with representative voices, noise, pace, and the actual signal chain.

Troubleshooting steps

  1. Read the meter. Distinguish no signal, low signal, healthy speech, and clipping.
  2. Check source gain. Inspect microphone, mixer, interface, pad/phantom power, mute, channel assignment, and physical cable.
  3. Check software gain. Use only enough gain to reach a consistent level; excessive gain raises noise.
  4. Check device ownership. Close conferencing, DAW, recorder, or browser tabs that may hold exclusive access.
  5. Monitor safely. Use headphones and avoid routing TTS/monitor return into the capture bus.
  6. Handle missing devices. Keep the event offline if possible, reconnect/reselect, then rerun preflight.
  7. Handle live loss. Communicate, switch to the documented backup, verify meter and captions, then investigate the failed path.

After the fix: The configured audio and recognition path produces stable, attributable captions within the approved latency/quality target and has a tested recovery path.

Confirm the fix

  • Meters are stable, peaks do not clip, monitoring is feedback-free, and backup switching is understood.

If the problem continues

Meter active but no captions

Check source language/provider/session state and whether signal is intelligible.

Level fluctuates widely

Fix microphone technique, mixer dynamics, auto-gain, or loose cabling before heavy processing.

Device returns under new name

Reselect explicitly and update the runbook/preset.

Escalation and safety

  • Do not repeatedly reconnect USB hardware during air.
  • Protect hearing when monitoring.
  • Preserve logs/device names after intermittent failures.
